November marks the start of the wet season in Darwin. This year it also brought a change in command at HMAS Coonawarra, as Navy’s first woman to sail as a Darwin patrol boat navigator took charge of one of Australia’s most critical defence establishments.
As services prepared for the imminent approach of Tropical Cyclone Fina, Captain Bernadette Alexander took the reins of Australia’s northernmost naval base from Captain David Shirvington, accepting the ‘weight of command’ in the form of a nautical telescope.
Captain Shirvington was recognised for his leadership during his command, while his wife, Tamara, was thanked for the support that helped make it a success.
While most first days in a new role are spent being brought up to speed, for Captain Alexander they were spent preparing for an incoming natural disaster. She said the task was made easier by the professionalism and discipline of Darwin’s serving personnel, port services and base management.
“Darwin is renowned for its teamwork. The calm and collaborative approach from across the teams to Tropical Cyclone Fina just exemplified this,” Captain Alexander said.
“Our response was in line with Coonawarra’s motto – ‘Above and Beyond’. I am extremely proud of each and every member.”
Inspired by her great-grandfather’s service at Gallipoli and named for her grandfather, who served in Papua New Guinea in World War 2, it is safe to say that service runs in Captain Alexander’s veins.
For Captain Alexander, returning to Darwin felt like coming full circle.
“I feel privileged to be given the opportunity to serve in the north again,” Captain Alexander said.
“This establishment is critical in maintaining Australia’s national security. I know the personnel that take up a posting here feel immense pride for the difference they are making for our nation.
“My command tenure will be one of service to Northern Territory Navy personnel and their families, and to ensure they are well supported to continue to deliver one fleet that is focused, lethal and ready.”
