Players from AFL team GWS Giants joined HMAS Canberra to learn more about Navy culture and teamwork, and to put Canberra's four gyms to the test.
During a memorable weekend, around 220 family members and the professional athletes joined Canberra’s crew for a glimpse into life at sea.
The visit offered an immersive program filled with hands-on activities, from weapons demonstrations, guided tours and joint physical training.
GWS Giants midfielder and Canberra local Tom Green admitted that although he’d had some exposure to the military as the son of a former Army helicopter pilot, this was his first Navy ship visit.
“It’s been such a great experience, and I’m so thankful for the Navy and the ship’s company for having us and answering all my questions,” the 24-year-old said.
“What struck me was the discipline that both of our organisations show on the field and at sea; we all work together as a team and unit to make things happen.
“Canberra is an incredible vessel, and it’s been great to learn more about the ship, the types of different missions she goes on.”
GWS Giants coach Adam Kingsley said the experience had him appreciate the similarities of leadership and mentorship.
“It’s been a great way for our players to be able to witness dedication and camaraderie in a different environment,” he said.
“I have lots of respect for the Navy sailors, officers and aviators, and like football, I think everyone realises that we all want the same thing – we don’t necessarily all see it the same way, but we’re all paid to do our jobs too, so we all try and do it to the best of our abilities.”
Commanding Officer Canberra Captain David McPherson welcomed the sea of orange-clad players on to the ship and the opportunity to interact with a high-performance organisation.
“This is our first major engagement with GWS, and I hope the exposure to such an unfamiliar environment is a story for them worth telling when they go home,” Captain McPherson said.
