HMAS Canberra played host to more than 300 family members and guests for a rare weekend at sea, off the coast of NSW.
The ship turned into a buzzing mix of tours, demos, physical training workouts, a movie night and some impressive catering as everyone got a taste of life on board.
From watching a UH-60 Black Hawk lift off the deck, to exploring areas normally off-limits, visitors received the full experience.
A highlight of the weekend was the celebration of the ship’s 11th anniversary of commissioning, marked with a specially created cake and personalised cupcakes prepared by Canberra’s culinary team.
Among those in attendance was a tearful Lucy Zhang who watched her daughter, Able Seaman Jiayu Zhang, prepare dinner for all on board.
She travelled from Perth to see her daughter’s floating workplace in person.
“I’m so proud to be here with Jiayu, she’s actually the first person in our family to serve in the Navy,” Mrs Zhang said.
“She’s a very independent, strong woman in uniform and it’s great to be able to see her at work.”
Commanding Officer Canberra Captain David McPherson emphasised the value of bringing families into the heart of Navy life, acknowledging the essential role they play in supporting serving members from home.
“Everything we do at sea and supporting the nation cannot be done without family. They are what enable us to carry out our responsibilities,” Captain McPherson said.
“If you look around, you can see all the smiles, engagement and interest.
“We’re proud to show them what the demand of ‘service before self’ brings to the table, and it’s also an opportunity for our friends to meet our families as well.
“We hope everyone leaves with a deeper appreciation of the work we do.”
The fast-moving weekend concluded on a ceremonial note, with families watching loved ones receive awards and commendations recognising excellence, dedication and long-term service.
