Safeguarding Defence personnel, infrastructure and assets, South Queensland’s Joint Logistics Unit site supervisor Brett Boatfield has been recognised for his outstanding service and leadership.

Praised for his actions at the 2023 Southern Downs fires, the Australian Public Service member received the Australian Defence Force Gold Level Commendation in the presence of family and friends. 

Commanding Officer Joint Logistics Unit – South Queensland Lieutenant Colonel Lisa Hodda said the award recognised Mr Boatfield’s professionalism and commitment to service.

“It’s an absolute honour to be have been able to present this commendation, for not only the exceptional work Mr Boatfield completed in his Defence role at Wallangarra Stores Depot during the 2023 fires, but also his broader contributions to community engagement and cooperation throughout the region,” Lieutenant Colonel Hodda said.

“His efforts in protecting our people, the base and our equipment were beyond the expectations of his role and we are particularly proud and grateful for his commitment to his duties.”

As the site supervisor during the emergency, Mr Boatfield worked closely with local authorities and emergency services. His decisive actions and calm leadership ensured the safety of the base and its people, enabling the continuation of depot operations with minimal disruption.

Reflecting on the commendation, Mr Boatfield said he was humbled by the recognition.

“It was very unexpected, but I’m honoured and proud to receive the commendation,” he said.

“It’s very special, but I was only doing my job.”

The Gold Level Commendation is one of the highest forms of recognition available to Defence personnel and public servants, awarded for exceptional service that upholds the values and reputation of the Australian Defence Force.

Mr Boatfield’s actions during the Southern Downs fires exemplify his courage and professionalism in the face of adversity.

His service highlights the critical contribution of Defence civilians who work tirelessly in support of Defence operations.
