RAAF Base Williamtown, 77 Squadron and 2 Operational Conversion Unit (2OCU) have hosted a family day in recognition of the critical support their friends and family provide to the Air Force.
The event last month provided an opportunity for members to share their workplace with their families, and enjoy a variety of capability displays.
This included military working dog handling displays, an F-35A Lightning II aerial display, static aircraft displays, 26 Squadron Fire Section displays, virtual reality, and supporting organisations.
Executive Officer 77 Squadron, Squadron Leader Nicholas Reynolds, attended with his wife and two-year-old daughter.
Squadron Leader Reynolds highlighted the importance of days like these.
“It's a chance to showcase the broader Air Force and the roles which make up the wider team,” he said.
“It's not just the shiny jets at the front, it's also the supporting assets, like the fire fighters, the ambulance officers, the medics and the military working dogs. It's a chance to showcase the capabilities of everyone here on base.
“For our aviators’ families and friends, days like these are a chance to see the faces behind the uniform, and where their loved ones fit in. Where they fit into the bigger Defence community here in Williamtown, around Australia, and wherever our armed forces are.”
'You're on the job while you're flying the display. But it is also enjoyable, particularly when you know your family and friends are down there watching you.'
Families and friends were treated to ground displays, statics and – to the delight of many younger attendees – face painting and balloon animals.
The military working dogs drew large crowds, and the F-35A Lightning II display pilot from 2OCU conducted an aerial display, wowing spectators.
Squadron Leader Reynolds, also a fast jet pilot, explained what goes through the mind of a display pilot on days like these.
“You're on the job while you're flying the display,” he said.
“But it is also enjoyable, particularly when you know your family and friends are down there watching you.
“During the display the pilot showcased the F-35 manoeuvrability, speed and raw sound.”
Family support is integral to the success of squadron operations. Without the support of their communities, Defence members would be unable to provide the service they do.
