HMAS Ballarat has conducted a series of transits and patrols through the South China Sea as part of her regional presence deployment.
These activities form part of Australia’s ongoing contribution to regional security and stability by supporting freedom of navigation and overflight, strengthening cooperation with partners and enhancing interoperability.
Chief of Joint Operations Vice Admiral Justin Jones said Australia’s routine maritime activities reflected the ADF’s longstanding commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
“The South China Sea is a vital waterway for the entire international community,” Vice Admiral Jones said.
“For decades, Defence has undertaken maritime activities in the region and does so in accordance with international law, exercising the right to freedom of navigation and overflight in international waters and airspace.”
Ballarat is deployed on a three-month regional presence deployment across the Indo-Pacific, Australia’s fourth for 2025, demonstrating the ADF’s commitment to maintaining a near-permanent presence in the region.
'Our ongoing presence in the South China Sea reflects Australia’s commitment to a rules-based order and reinforces our role as a trusted and capable regional partner.'
Commanding Officer Ballarat Commander Dean Uren said his crew had directly contributed to regional stability while showcasing Australia’s ability to operate effectively alongside partners and allies.
“The Indo-Pacific is one of the world’s most important maritime areas,” Commander Uren said.
“Our ongoing presence in the South China Sea reflects Australia’s commitment to a rules-based order and reinforces our role as a trusted and capable regional partner.
“Through these patrols, our sailors gain valuable experience operating in complex environments while strengthening our relationships and interoperability with like-minded nations.”
Commander Uren said regional presence deployments were a practical demonstration of Australia’s integrated deterrence approach outlined in the National Defence Strategy.
“By maintaining this continuous presence in the region alongside our allies and partners, we contribute to maintaining an open, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific,” he said.
