Inspired by her parents who both served in the NSW Police, Corporal Krista Bishenden sought a life of service, discipline and camaraderie.

Now a seasoned Security Forces (SECFOR) operator, Corporal Bishenden is putting her skills to work on Operation Kudu, supporting Australia’s contribution to NATO’s efforts.

“I’ve been to 11 countries, including operations across the Middle East and exercises in places like Hawaii,” she said.

“But I think this is the coolest place I’ve served, because of what we’re doing here in support of NATO, it’s a really big step.”

Before joining the Royal Australian Air Force, Corporal Bishenden was a promising soccer player in the National Premier League, representing Gold Coast United.

She quickly transitioned from the sporting field to the demanding environment of military service.

“I love the respect we get when we’re in uniform. People value the work we do, and it’s something to be proud of,” Corporal Bishenden said.

“Being in SECFOR comes with a lot of responsibility, especially on operations.”

The role is not without challenges. SECFOR operators are required to maintain a high level of fitness, possess tactical awareness and lead teams in different environments.

'Our success is measured when everything runs smoothly after all the planning and hard work we’ve put in.'

Since enlisting, Corporal Bishenden has taken on mission planning and team leadership, ensuring deployed contingents remain secure.

During Operation Kudu, her team was responsible for safeguarding the RAAF’s E-7A Wedgetail during the deployment of the contingent, which included up to 100 ADF personnel.

“We make sure the asset is protected and there are no security breaches that could compromise the mission,” Corporal Bishenden explained.

“Our success is measured when everything runs smoothly after all the planning and hard work we’ve put in.”

Although Corporal Bishenden joked that she described her job to friends and family as “being a security guard”, she is passionate about encouraging others to consider the career.

“If you want a stimulating job where you keep fit, take on real responsibility and travel the world, come give SECFOR a go,” she said.

The Australian Government remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s illegal and immoral invasion, including efforts under Operation Kudu, and Corporal Bishenden is proud to be part of it.
