The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) Mustangs netball teams secured victories in all three grand finals in the North Canberra Netball Competition.
Comprising midshipmen and officer cadets, the success of the three triservice teams on September 20 was a high point for head coach Wing Commander Jacqui Carswell.
“Seeing these women develop into confident leaders who thrive in any team, both on the court and in Defence, has been incredibly rewarding,” Wing Commander Carswell said.
“Netball at ADFA is a platform for building resilience and decision-making skills that our future officers will carry into their careers.”
As president of the ADF Netball Association (ADFNA), Wing Commander Carswell has cultivated an inclusive environment where players hone their abilities through the game’s dynamic challenges.
“The blend of Navy, Army and Air Force personnel creates a unique energy. Guiding that mix into cohesive, winning teams has been a privilege,” she said.
'If you’re passionate about netball and shaping ADF talent, this is your opportunity to make a difference.'
Wing Commander Carswell, who began coaching the Mustangs in 2020 and has been head coach since 2021, is eager to find a successor as she prepares for a new posting.
“Coaching netball is a powerful experience," she said.
"You play a central role in developing players and teams, as well as strategies and tactics they will use when playing the game, but more importantly, you inspire growth in character and leadership.
“If you’re passionate about netball and shaping ADF talent, this is your opportunity to make a difference.”
The ADFNA organises annual carnivals across women’s, mixed and men’s divisions at interservice and national levels.
Wing Commander Carswell said the upcoming ADFNA carnival in Sydney, from November 15 to 22 at Minto Indoor Sports Centre, would be a highlight.
“We’re assembling teams from every state and service to join this celebration of Defence sport,” she said.
“Whether you want to play, coach, umpire or even get involved as a team manager, there’s a place for you. Netball opens doors to the opportunities Defence provides.”
