Flying alongside fighter jets and aircraft from Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and the United Kingdom over maritime assets from the same nations is a rare and remarkable experience.

Flight Lieutenant 'Milo' had the honour of serving as aircraft captain of the F-35A Lightning II during a multinational photo exercise, where Malaysian helicopter crews captured stunning images of Five Power Defence Arrangements (FDPA) aircraft flying in formation above naval vessels.

“We flew out in the South China Sea with all the other nations,” he said.

“We brought together a wide range of aircraft and carriers and had the opportunity to take some photos to show everyone what we’re doing here on exercise.”

This deployment also marks a significant milestone as the first time F-35A Lightning II fighter jets have operated out of Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Kuantan Airbase in Malaysia.

'We get to experience their culture, learn their ways of operating, and they get to learn from us as well.'

Working in tandem with the Royal Australian Air Force's C-27J Spartan, which provided exposure flights for FPDA participants, the F-35As showcased their capabilities with dynamic flyovers – some performed with the Spartan’s ramp down for a dramatic view.

RAAF's 75 Squadron also welcomed members of the Gurkhas from the Gurkha ARRC Support Battalion, offering them a guided tour of the F-35As and sharing insights into the aircraft’s advanced capabilities.

Beyond tactical operations, Flight Lieutenant Milo highlighted the importance of cultural exchange and collaboration.

“My favourite thing about Exercise Bersama Lima is getting to come here to Kuantan and operate with all the different countries,” he said.

“We get to experience their culture, learn their ways of operating, and they get to learn from us as well.”

The exercise plays a vital role in promoting regional stability and strengthening defence ties among FPDA nations.

“It’s really important for us to practise in this region,” Flight Lieutenant Milo added.

“It promotes regional stability and gives us the opportunity to integrate with all the other nations as part of the FPDA.”
