With a day job in the Royal Australian Navy Band in Western Australia, Able Seaman Murray Jongeling is a man of many creative talents.
In addition to his musical expertise, Able Seaman Jongeling is a skilled graphic designer, currently applying his talents within Cyber Command, part of Joint Capabilities Group.
As a member of the Information Advantage Centre of Excellence, his design work plays a key role in ensuring publications, branding and promotional materials are visually engaging and professionally presented.
Among his many contributions, a unique task was the design of a new challenge coin for the Chief of Joint Capabilities Lieutenant General Susan Coyle.
The coin needed to represent the diverse domains of Joint Capabilities Group – Space, Cyber and National Support – while also reflecting Lieutenant General Coyle’s role as Defence’s Indigenous Champion.
“The challenge coin is a symbol of pride and connection across our group,” Lieutenant General Coyle said.
“Able Seaman Jongeling’s design not only captured the essence of our capabilities, but also thoughtfully incorporated our commitment to Indigenous engagement. It’s a powerful piece of work.”
'It’s a testament to the talent we have across Defence, and the value of creative thinking in supporting our mission'
The final design captured all these elements, highlighting Able Seaman Jongeling’s ability to blend symbolism, creativity and purpose into a single piece of art.
Beyond the challenge coin, Able Seaman Jongeling also developed branding for Space and Cyber Careers for the recent ADFA open day, further highlighting his versatility and impact across Defence initiatives.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Able Seaman Jongeling was awarded a Silver Commendation during a small ceremony in Western Australia.
Lieutenant General Coyle personally presented the commendation, along with one of the newly minted challenge coins – marking the first time Able Seaman Jongeling saw his design brought to life.
“Handing the coin to Able Seaman Jongeling was a special moment,” Lieutenant General Coyle added.
“It’s a testament to the talent we have across Defence, and the value of creative thinking in supporting our mission.”
