Air Force marks VP Day at Canberra Theatre Centre

26 August 2025

In a sombre tribute to service and sacrifice, the Air Force Band delivered two commemorative concerts at the Canberra Theatre Centre for the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific.

Across two stellar performances, the band treated civilians, Defence members and their families to an extensive repertoire of music. From solemn solo pieces, to triumphant tracks and timeless hits, the band presented a poignant homage.

Commanding Officer Air Force Band Squadron Leader Daniel Phillips emphasised the effort and dedication of the band in the lead up to the event.

“This is a major performance for the Air Force Band,” Squadron Leader Phillips said.

“To put a show on like this, it takes a lot of preparation and planning. We’ve had to put in weeks of rehearsals for this show, in addition to our regular routine of support to Air Force parades and Defence events around the country.”

'It’s really remarkable to be celebrating 80 years later.'

Victory in the Pacific Day (also known as VP Day) is held on August 15 each year to remember the end of World War 2 in the Pacific, marking one of the most significant dates in Australia’s military history.

The resounding cheers of the audience were reminiscent of the celebrations from parades that took place 80 years ago, memorialising the end of a long and devastating conflict.

For Corporal Chloe Bruer-Jones, the event held a personal significance as well.

“It’s a celebration of the end of the war,” Corporal Bruer-Jones said.

“My great-grandfather, Lieutenant Colonel Lionel Gregory Bruer, served in the Second World War. He was one of the Rats of Tobruk.

“He survived the war, and he would have been celebrating on that day. It’s really remarkable to be celebrating 80 years later, in honour of him.”

More than 800 civilians, Defence members and their families attended the events, with entry being a gold-coin donation for the Air Force Association, raising funds to promote social activities and welfare for current and former serving members of the ADF.
