Foreign forces unite on the flight line

29 July 2025

On the eastern flank of Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025, RAAF Base Amberley stood as the power hub of cargo and passenger air movements.

Operating around the clock, Australia’s largest logistics base supported the force flow of more than 40,000 personnel – powered by a diverse team of Australian and international partners working shoulder to shoulder to deliver mission success.

To sustain the high tempo and increased demand, Amberley’s base unit 23 Squadron augmented with partner nation personnel from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

Commander Task Unit Headquarters East Group Captain Arran Moore said the integration of foreign nation personnel into base support teams was a key strategic intent of the exercise.

“From air and ground movements, fire section, refuelling and catering teams, RAAF Base Amberley has been a key enabler to the force flow of personnel as they travel through the exercise training areas,” Group Captain Moore said.

“Without the support of our members and partner nations, we wouldn't be able to generate the air power effects required in the conduct of the exercise.

“By working together in Talisman Sabre, we lay the foundations to be able to conduct integrated combined operations in future, whenever our government calls upon us.”

'It’s not often we are able to work with such a significant mix of nations at the same time.'

Air Movements Royal Air Force Air Specialist (Class 1) Kate Oldershaw enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside new friends at 23 Squadron’s air movements terminal.

“While we work alongside other teams when deployed internationally, it’s not often we are able to work with such a significant mix of nations at the same time,” she said.

“The biggest thing we’ve learnt here is communication is key.

“We all speak English – but use different acronyms, phrases and terms. We all do things slightly differently, and it’s been great to gain an understanding of a new way of doing things. I look forward to taking the learning touchpoints to future activities.”

Exercises such as Talisman Sabre test the skills of aviators in all roles and domains, working together to build and affirm military-to-military ties and strengthen international cooperation.
