Training in action at vehicle incident

26 June 2025

For the civilians involved in a high-impact vehicle incident near Rainbow Beach, Queensland, the sight of the Army arriving was a moment of reassurance.

On Rainbow Beach Road, two soldiers from the 9th Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment (9RQR) were first responders to a serious incident involving multiple casualties.

Warrant Officer Class Two (WO2) Troy Robertson and WO2 Jamie Sharp were conducting routine duties near the area when they came across the scene.

Both members took immediate control of the scene, triaging and treating three wounded civilians; two priority-3 patients and one priority-2 patient.

“We also managed traffic control, ensuring the safety of all on scene until the arrival of Queensland Ambulance Service and Rural Fire Service Queensland, where we conducted handover-takeover,” WO2 Robertson said.

After assisting with the casualties, WO2 Robertson and WO2 Sharp returned to Camp Kerr, where they provided a full debrief.

The Commanding Officer of 9RQR, Lieutenant Colonel Alan Hockings, commended the soldiers’ swift response.

“This is a perfect example of how our training in leadership, first aid, and being calm under pressure translates directly to real-world positive outcomes,” Lieutenant Colonel Hockings said.

“WO2 Robertson and WO2 Sharp acted without hesitation and with professionalism that reflects the very best of our Army.”
