Bands across the sea make waves in Sydney

3 June 2025

On a perfect Sydney day, Navy-to-Navy cooperation hit a high note as bands rocked the forecourt of the Australian National Maritime Museum.

The Royal Australian Navy Band Sydney and the US 7th Fleet Band ‘Orient Express’ played crowd-pleasing hits such as You’re Amazing, Don’t Stop Believing and American Boy.

The free concert, which drew a large Darling Harbour audience, was part of a broader community engagement program between the two navies during 7th Fleet flagship USS Blue Ridge’s port visit from Yokosuka, Japan.

It was US Navy Musician 2nd Class Marcelo Carrion’s first time in Australia, and he was thrilled to be part of the performance – using music, he said, to bring joy and foster connection across cultures.

“Performing with musicians from the RAN Band Sydney was an incredible honour and a unique opportunity,” Musician 2nd Class Carrion said.

“Music really is a universal language. Wherever we go, it allows us to connect, show unity and bring smiles to people around the world.”

Among the six-strong RAN Band Sydney ensemble, musician Petty Officer Tracy Kennedy said she found Orient Express’ performance deeply inspiring and full of American flair.

“Singing alongside Musician 2nd Class Ashley Oliveto for the final number was a real highlight,” Petty Officer Kennedy said.

“We hadn’t met before, and she’s an incredible vocalist.”

Orient Express is one of five professional ensembles within the 7th Fleet Band, known for their energetic rock covers of artists such as Prince, Bronski Beat and Bruno Mars.

US Navy bass guitarist Musician 1st Class Joshua Haney has toured Australia four times and cherishes the moments when crowds sing along and dance to their music.

"What really moves me is seeing everyone come together through music,” Musician 1st Class Haney said.

“Even though we’re from different countries, when we share those moments, it’s clear we’re connected – like one team, facing whatever comes next, side by side.”
