Sergeant Angela Wiseman has once again proven herself among the world’s best, securing a third-place ranking globally in natural bodybuilding.
However, for Sergeant Wiseman, who previously held the number one spot, this season came with an unexpected challenge – one that tested her mindset as much as her physique.
“It was tough seeing the top spot go to someone else,” she said.
“But I have incredible friendships with my competitors and we push each other to be better. It’s now about refining my approach, taking on feedback and preparing to come back stronger.”
Her ability to stay resilient in the face of setbacks is a lesson she carries beyond bodybuilding.
Sergeant Wiseman’s advice for those facing challenges, whether in sport, service or life, is simple yet powerful.
“You have to take the positives and use them to move forward. No matter your age or background, you can always put steps in place to improve,” she said.
Balancing sport with her demanding role as the Air Force Group Web Manager, Sergeant Wiseman exemplifies discipline and resilience both in uniform and in bodybuilding.
'The resilience and discipline required for competition mirror what’s needed in the Air Force.'
When she steps onto the stage, she’s not just competing for a title, she’s proving to herself and others that commitment to self-improvement can break barriers at any stage of life.
“I get up at 3am, leave home by 4 and hit the gym before work,” said the 45-year-old.
“It’s my time to focus and prepare myself for the day ahead. I thrive on discipline.”
A veteran competitor since 2007, Sergeant Wiseman has consistently been among the world’s best in natural bodybuilding, competing every two years. In 2022 she held the title of number one in the world in her main federation, the Professional Natural Bodybuilding Association (PNBA). In 2024, despite an incredibly close competition, she placed third.
Unlike standard bodybuilding, natural bodybuilding prohibits the use of performance-enhancing drugs, requiring athletes to rely solely on rigorous training, disciplined nutrition and mental fortitude to build their physique.
Sergeant Wiseman competes across three federations – the PNBA, the Organisation of Competition Bodies (OCB) and the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation. Her most recent season saw her clinch multiple titles, including first place in OCB’s Figure Masters category, earning her professional status in yet another federation.
Beyond personal achievements, Sergeant Wiseman is passionate about giving back. She runs a bodybuilding competition specifically for Defence and Emergency Services personnel, helping others on their fitness journeys.
“It’s a small event, but it provides an opportunity for transformation, whether you’re just starting or an experienced competitor,” she said.
The next competition is set for May 3 in Canberra, with details available at desbodybuilding.com.au.
'I believe in pushing forward, surrounding myself with the right people and always striving for better.'
Sergeant Wiseman’s journey into bodybuilding started in Malaysia, where she was posted for three years. Returning home, she sought guidance from her mother, nursing officer Wing Commander Kay Wiseman, to improve her fitness.
“My mother was competing herself at the time, so her advice set me on the right path,” said Sergeant Wiseman, whose experience in natural bodybuilding has significantly shaped her approach to military service.
“The resilience and discipline required for competition mirror what’s needed in the Air Force.
“There’s always a challenge, always something to improve, whether it’s in the gym or in my professional role.”
The Air Force Sports Council recognises Sergeant Wiseman as an elite athlete, providing support for her competitions. Initially, she only received additional leave for international events, but in recent years, financial support has helped ease the burden of competing at a world-class level.
Sergeant Wiseman is now preparing for her next season, remaining focused on continuous improvement.
“Setbacks don’t define you – how you respond to them does,” she said.
“I believe in pushing forward, surrounding myself with the right people and always striving for better.”
