Students at Central Queensland University (CQU), Mackay, heard first-hand experiences about Army radiography during a visit from 2nd Health Battalion and Health Reserve Advisory Group guest lecturers.
Army radiographer Major Steve Rusman delivered a field radiography case-study presentation to first and third-year students and shared some of the career opportunities the students could explore in full and part-time Army roles.
“Radiography has been an absolutely amazing career for me and it’s great to share those experiences with others so that they consider joining up,” Major Rusman said.
“Being a radiographer in the field is so different to a hospital or private-practice career – we see diverse and interesting cases, with the added challenge of operating in austere environments.
“The CQU radiography students seemed really interested in what an Army career could offer them – and by offering the university an Army guest lecturer for a day, it meant their students got to learn all about the positive experiences associated with a career in Army health.”
The students also heard from intensive care unit (ICU) nursing officer and recent Royal Military College – Duntroon graduate Lieutenant Samantha Trapp.
Lieutenant Trapp said she was excited to share her experiences in Army, in contrast to her day job as an ICU nurse at Mackay Base Hospital.
“As I am new to the Army Reserve, it was great to be able to share my recent experiences of initial training with the CQU students,” Lieutenant Trapp said.
“They were so fascinated in how enjoyable I found training and what skills it has equipped me with.”
The event will be held again at the CQU campus next year.
