On June 2 a group of 300 gathered at the Australian War Memorial to commemorate the memory of all those who served in the Royal Air Force Bomber Command during World War 2.
The day featured a Canberra Bomber flypast, piloted by retired Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin, and a host of other guests including the Governor-General, international dignitaries, Bomber Command veterans and veterans’ families.
The success of the annual commemoration is owed largely to the hard-working Bomber Command Commemorative Day Foundation Inc. (BCCDF).
Foundation president and retired Air Vice-Marshal Warren Ludwig attended and spoke to the success of this year’s event.
“The most moving part of the event is the opportunity to hear, first hand, the heart-wrenching stories from veterans and their families of the exploits, losses and bravery of Bomber Command crews on missions,” Mr Ludwig said.
Retired Flight Lieutenant Herbert ‘Bert’ Adams – a recent centenarian and Bomber Command veteran – gave an inspiring address detailing the loss of some of his closest colleagues and the operational difficulties the bombers faced, including navigation challenges, during World War 2.
The next generation of aviators also contributed to the day, with Cadet Under Officers Jakob Elphick and Olivia Scholten, of 334 Squadron, providing a moving joint address. They attested to how the service and sacrifice of those in Bomber Command inspired today’s youth – particularly those in the Australian Air Force Cadets – to live by the values set by the RAAF.
The commemorations provided the opportunity to reflect on the sacrifice and values of those who served in Bomber Command. It was also a way for families to meet each other and share experiences and knowledge of what their relatives might have gone through.
“The ceremony was started by veterans to remember their friends that served, but I think it’s important to also remember those who came back and survived the war. Their names won’t appear on memorials, but they shouldn’t be forgotten,” Mr Ludwig said.
“The BCCDF, a small group of volunteers comprised of the children of Bomber Command veterans, serving and retired Air Force members and other patriotic Australians, is committed to honouring the sacrifices of Bomber Command veterans.
“We welcome anyone interested in joining our ranks to ensure the legacy of Bomber Command veterans lives on.”
