Signaller Wikitoria ‘Tori’ Kirkby, a communications systems operator, is a young woman going places - literally.
The 23-year-old, who recently took up a posting as signaller for the Commander of the 1st (Australian) Division, found herself on a plane from Brisbane to Japan to join Exercise Yama Sakura 85 (YS85).
It was a voyage of discovery.
“I love it here in Japan, especially the food,” Signaller Kirby said during the exercise.
Her primary role on YS85 was to provide communications and other support for the commander and his team.
Yama Sakura is likely to be the first of many trips across Australia and around the world in her new role.
“I haven’t done a lot of travelling before, so I’m really looking forward to it,” Signaller Kirby said.
“I’m keeping an open mind. I don’t mind going anywhere. All of it will be new to me, so it should be a good, new experience.
“It will be very exciting.”
She said her inspiration to serve came from her great grandfather, who served in the military, and said she had her heart set on being part of the Army for as long as she can remember.
“I’ve always wanted to join the Army since I was a little girl,” she said.
“There was a time in my life when I was feeling quite ready to do so … and here I am today.”
Signaller Kirby’s parents and two sisters live in Launceston, along with her two-year-old niece.
“They’re very proud of me,” she said.
“It can be hard being away from home for long periods of time, and they know it gets quite busy, but I hope to find time soon to get back for a visit.”
