Wessels Botha has found his dream job, working as part of the Arafura-class Offshore Patrol Vessel Enterprise as an integrated logistics specialist engineer for Luerssen Australia.
Combining his love for the ocean and passion for design, Mr Botha studied Marine and Offshore Systems Engineering at the Australian Maritime College (AMC).
“Through my studies at AMC, the student reps encouraged me to sign up to the Naval Shipbuilding College’s workforce register,” Mr Botha said.
“The college then called me about the Luerssen Australia role I’m in right now, so had I not been on the workforce register I would not have this amazing opportunity to begin my career.
“My job is constantly changing, with new challenges presented every day. I work closely with the team, analysing the systems of the offshore patrol vessels and the parts required to build and maintain them.”
Mr Botha said students preparing to graduate, and graduates looking for an exciting career, should consider the many opportunities available in Australia’s naval shipbuilding sector.
The Australian Government’s National Naval Shipbuilding Enterprise is regenerating Australia’s naval fleet through a planned investment of at least $168 billion over the coming decades.
At the launch of the Arafura-class Offshore Patrol Vessel Enterprise in March, Secretary of the Department of Defence Greg Moriarty said the job opportunities in the naval shipbuilding sector also enhanced the Navy’s ability to protect our maritime resources, borders and trade, keeping Australia safe.
“Not only does this promise to deliver long-term jobs to West Australians and confidence for industry to invest in Perth, it will ensure our Navy is able to meet all government taskings in order to protect our nation’s security,” Mr Moriarty said.
