Military horsepower clears the way

24 June 2021

The ADF task group supporting the clean-up efforts in regional Victoria following the recent storms is using the power of military vehicles to clear roads.

Task Group 1, under the command of Joint Task Group 629.2, has been operating in Gippsland since June 20 with a focus on clearing roads.

In the township of Willung South, south-east of Traralgon, severe storms that hit the area caused trees to fall and block roads in and out of the community.

The task group used the mass and power of an Army Bushmaster protected mobility vehicle to remove trees from roads.

Commander of one of the task teams Lieutenant Robert Baillieu said the focus of Army, Navy and Air Force personnel had been route clearance, primarily using chainsaws and medium plant equipment like the 434 loader.

“Our personnel have come from across the entire state of Victoria to help the local community in its recovery as part of the whole-of-government effort in this storm-affected region,” Lieutenant Baillieu said.
