While the ADF has made progress in regards to gender equality, Director of Gender, Peace and Security Captain Jenn Macklin recognises there is more work to be done.
In the lead-up to International Women’s Day on March 8, Defence reflects on the contribution, leadership and progress women in the ADF have made over the past 20 years.
In October 2000, the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 – Women, Peace and Security was signed, recognising the important role women play in the prevention of conflict and peacekeeping.
The ADF is positioned as a world leader in putting this resolution into practice.
Since it was signed, Defence has integrated a gender perspective into many core business activities.
Defence also has contributed 20 gender advisers to multinational operations and many more to exercises across the Indo-Pacific region from 2014.
In 2017, Defence released the world-renowned ADF gender adviser course and has trained 280 Australian and 60 international students.
“What I want is commitment to action, a commitment to take the agenda forward and to really make a difference.” Captain Macklin said.
“It’s all of us working together that will achieve gender equality in the long run.”
