Endurathon supports Wagga women

8 December 2020

Defence members rowed, marched, and pumped their way to raising $4120.50 for the Wagga Women’s Health Centre in the RAAF Base Wagga Endurathon on November 12.

One of the event coordinators, Squadron Leader Janet Thompson, said the event was worthwhile.

“The Endurathon was a way to bring a group of mates together and spend a small part of our day outside our comfort zone in support of a good cause,” she said.

To participate, members registered individually or as a team.

Noteworthy performances included those of Flying Officer Tracey-Patte and Warrant Officer Barry Eichmann, of the RAAF School of Technical Training, who were in the gym for the entire 12 hours of the event, rotating between the rower, ski erg and assault bike.

Aircraftwoman Sarah Gibbs and Aircraftman Andrew van Rooyen, of the RAAF School of Administration and Logistics Training (RAAFSALT), both completed 100km on the assault bike, and members of the Wagga Women's Health Centre's Medical Team Awesome did three-hour rotations throughout the Endurathon.

Honourable mentions go to Bundy’s aerobics class, Joint Military Police Unit staff in full battle order walking the base perimeter, and the RAAFSALT team that wore Hawaiian flamingo ensembles.

Our aim remains to publicly acknowledge all women who have experienced violence and make a stand against violence against women.

On November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Senior ADF Officer RAAF Base Wagga Group Captain Chris Ellison handed over the proceeds of the event to the Wagga Women’s Health Centre.

“RAAF Base Wagga has had a lengthy association with the Wagga Women’s Health Centre and our donation is a clear sign of our commitment to their work in supporting victims of domestic and family violence in our community,” Group Captain Ellison said.

Leah Anderson of the Wagga Women’s Health Centre said she was delighted with the support.

“Our aim remains to publicly acknowledge all women who have experienced violence and make a stand against violence against women in all of its forms,” she said.

The centre provides an alternative, feminist health care service run by women for women, ensuring accessibility, without financial, cultural or other barriers, to the women of Wagga Wagga and surrounds.

The centre incorporates a holistic range of wellness supports, including emotional, psychological, social, and physical.
