With COVID-19 playing havoc with the usual fundraising activities of Legacy, the ADF stepped in to support.
The planned Charity Fundraising Ball 2020 was cancelled because of the pandemic, but in its place military equipment from south-east Queensland were placed around King George Square to support the Legacy Do more than Remember campaign.
Sergeant Steve Banks from 6 Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment said the public were appreciative of the display.
“We have an M113 AS4, infantry section weapons display and a section of infantry,” Sergeant Banks said.
“A lot of young kids have enjoyed the weapons display. It’s not often we get to go out and educate the public about what Defence does.”
Medical Assistant Corporal Anthony McLennan said RAAF No. 3 Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron had a static display of their medical evacuation capability, including G Wagon ambulances.
“We’ve been telling people what we do, which is basically fly all around the world, pick up patients and bring them home,” he said.
“Kids in particular have been interested in our display and former serving members.
“We’ve been getting questions about what we’re doing now as opposed to what they used to do back in their time.”
An M777 howitzer from 1 Field Regiment was Positioned towards the front of Brisbane Town Hall.
Lance Bombardier Patrick Smith of 1 Field Regiment said he was happy to educate the public about the role of artillery.
“We have the M777 here to help to raise the profile of Legacy. It’s a good cause to support so I am happy to be here,” he said.
“There were a couple of weddings going on today so a couple of them had their wedding photos in front of the M777.”
After the Legacy King George Square Activation, a VIP gala was held inside the Brisbane Town Hall.
All funds raised will help Legacy provide veterans’ families the financial, emotional and educational support they need.
