Navy trainers take up challenge for breast cancer

27 October 2020

Physical Training Instructors (PTIs) at HMAS Kuttabul are happy to put themselves through some pain for a good cause.

The PTIs are taking part in the Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation's fundraising burpee challenge.

For every dollar donated, either online through the foundation's website or at the Kuttabul gymnasium during October, they have pledged to do one burpee.

A day will be set aside in early November, but if more than $1000 is raised, they will complete the challenge over two days.

The burpee challenge was organised because COVID-19 restrictions meant the foundation was unable to hold its usual fundraising events.

Leading Seaman PTI Jessica Fisher said she expected many personnel would relish the idea of PTIs doing the dreaded exercises.

“It’s a good initiative that other workplaces can also get behind and, as PTIs, we’re happy to support it,” she said.

“My mother survived breast cancer so this is a cause very close to my heart.”

Warrant Officer Mark Donlan, who has been associated with the foundation for more than 10 years, said Kuttabul and ADF members in Sydney had been strong supporters of the foundation’s events over many years.

“Like most charity organisations, the foundation has significant financial commitments to meet, including the provision of breast care nurses, surgical fellows, research and support for breast cancer patients,” WO Donlan said.

“Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 restrictions this year, the Sydney Breast Care Foundation was unable to hold its annual signature fundraising events, such as the Rugby Long Lunch and Ladies Luncheon.”

Other workplaces that wish to participate in the burpee challenge can sign up at https://www.sbcf.org.au.
