Personnel, civilian staff and Defence contractors at RAAF Base Williamtown have committed their time and efforts to declare war on waste.
A steering committee, made up of volunteer unit representatives across the base, developed and implemented practical waste-management initiatives under which personnel and staff have been asked to rethink, refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle.
Since its establishment in late 2019, the committee has improved access to waste and recycling services, promoted behavioural change and encouraged other workplaces to become waste-management champions.
As one of the active partners in the campaign, Army and Air Force Canteen Service has implemented initiatives at its new base complex, including in-store recycling bins, coffee ground composting and providing improved environmentally friendly goods, beverage packaging and retail products.
Group Captain Peter Cluff said it had been a team effort.
“I am incredibly proud of the efforts of individuals, units and organisations across the base who have passionately committed to the initiative and have made a difference,” Group Captain Cluff said.
“The success of the initiative to date has no doubt been because of the volunteer efforts of committee members who have developed a robust plan of action and education program encouraging personnel and staff to reduce the total environmental footprint through changing individual behaviours.
“I will be watching with great interest as the initiative develops as it is a model that will continue to enhance existing environmentally sustainable practices and deliver new initiatives with a focus on achieving best practice for waste management as supported by our passionate, environmentally focused base community.”
