Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force - Biography

Mr James Gaynor, CSC

Mr James Gaynor commenced his term as the Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force with effect 1 December 2016. He has over 25 years’ experience as a legal practitioner, and Masters degrees in law and in public administration.

A former Army officer, Mr Gaynor has held a range of military justice roles including Deputy Director of Military Prosecutions and Director of Military Justice Performance Review. He deployed on operations to East Timor and Iraq. For his service in Iraq, he was awarded the United States Bronze Star Medal. Mr Gaynor was the Deputy Inspector-General prior to his appointment as Inspector-General.
