Defence’s learning activities help graduates connect with the Defence mission and the responsibilities of public service. They may also receive training and development specific to their relevant pathway.

The Defence Graduate Core Training Program is designed to equip graduates with a series of key core Australian Public Service (APS) capabilities. The training program adopts a blended learning approach with live-learning workshops and pre and post workshop activities.

In the first year, graduates will learn how to:

  • work effectively in teams and problem solve
  • build resilience
  • improve their communication skills
  • develop writing skills
  • work effectively at the APS 5 level.

At the start of the program, graduates need to complete a variety of mandatory training and cultural awareness training.

They will have a dedicated graduate pathway manager to help plan their career development during the program.

There are also additional learning opportunities through activities and unique experiences:

  • Going on base tours to experience military-led activities and walk a day in the shoes of Australian Defence Force.
  • Attending a Australian War Memorial tour, exploring Defence military history with current and ex-serving members.
  • Witnessing the dynamics of Parliament during Question Time.
  • Building an extensive network through dedicated APS-wide and Defence networking events.

By the end of the program, graduates will develop key skills across a range of development areas, increasing their understanding of Defence and the wider APS purpose.
