The Defence engineering pathway is where graduates' engineering skills can make a real difference in capability outcomes. This pathway offers the chance to build technical expertise while contributing to the design, development, testing and sustainment of cutting-edge Defence capability.

Opportunities

While working in a supportive pathway designed to grow their career, graduates will gain:

  • applied engineering experience across diverse and technically rich projects
  • mentorship from experienced engineers and subject matter experts
  • opportunities to innovate, problem solve and influence capability development.

From day one, graduates will work alongside experienced engineers and industry specialists, gaining experience through meaningful, structured on-the-job learning. This is the opportunity to solve complex challenges, work with advanced technologies, while directly supporting Defence operations.

Whether enhancing systems, developing emerging technologies, graduates play a crucial role in strengthening Australia’s safety and resilience.

Graduates can grow their engineering skills across a wide range of disciplines, including:

  • aerospace and aeronautical engineering
  • mechanical and mechatronic engineering
  • biomedical engineering
  • communications and electronics/electrical engineering
  • mechanical material and chemical engineering
  • civil, structural and environmental engineering
  • materiel capability and explosive ordnance
  • marine, naval architecture and avionics
  • airframes and engines
  • textiles and life support systems
  • engineering management.

Through their work, graduates may contribute to:

  • supporting aircraft systems, flight technologies, machinery, robotics, autonomous systems
  • safe management, integration and testing of defence materiel
  • managing networks, sensors, cyber enabled and electronic warfare systems
  • maintaining and improving base infrastructure, facilities, sustainability, environmental resilience
  • providing project support, risk management, systems engineering.

Eligibility

Applicants for the Engineering pathway must:

  • be an Australian citizen
  • have completed an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 7 qualification (bachelor degree) or higher equivalent between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2026
  • be able to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance.

Some engineering roles may require Engineering Australia membership or accreditation with the Washington Accord. If required, candidates will be informed of this at the time of receiving an offer.
