The Department of Defence is planning to upgrade and construct new fit-for-purpose facilities and infrastructure to support the introduction into service of the Hunter Class Frigates and the Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessels at several locations in Australia: HMAS Stirling and Henderson (Western Australia); HMAS Coonawarra and RAAF Darwin (Northern Territory); HMAS Cairns (Queensland); and St Kilda Transmitting Station and Osborne (South Australia).
The fleet of Hunter Class Frigates will be homeported at HMAS Stirling and at the Garden Island Defence Precinct (NSW). The fleet of Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessels will be homeported at HMAS Stirling, HMAS Coonawarra and HMAS Cairns.
Subject to Parliamentary approval, design and procurement activities will progressively be carried out at each of the locations, with the first construction works expected to commence in 2020. The NCIS Project is expected to be completed in 2027.
