The proposed new Through Life Support Facility will be located at Garden Island in part of a new three-storey building of approximately 5,600 square metres, built adjacent to the Captain Cook Graving Dock, on the existing site of Building 314, which will be demolished as part of the works. This new office complex includes both the AWD and LHD Through Life Support Facility and Systems Program Offices to maximise the efficiencies and synergies of these functional areas.
There is a requirement to provide a location ashore, proximate to the ships' berth, with the capacity for duty personnel from each ship to operate their vessel's Remote Monitoring System. Re-use of vacant space in Building 122 at Garden Island, an asset currently occupied by the RAN Port Services Manager - East, was considered and is proposed to be adopted as a cost effective solution for this function.
The proposed Lay Apart Store will partially occupy one end of Building 104 after the Thales licence expires on 30 June 2013. The store will provide a 50 square metre caged enclosure for each ship, totalling 150 square metres, and a shared office on an existing mezzanine level.
The proposed berthing infrastructure will install new cope points at berthing positions Fleet Base East 1, 2, and 3 for communications to support the proposed Remote Monitoring Station. The proposed LHD Berthing Infrastructure will also fit new foam filled fenders at Fleet Base East 1, 2 and 3 berthing positions. Additionally, the project will provide four storm bollards that will provide DEF(AUST)5000 mooring conditions for the new LHD ships allowing the new ships to be safely moored in 50 knot winds, gusting to 75 knots. Each storm bollard requires four piles to be driven at Garden Island. This work is programmed to occur between July 2014 and March 2015.
