Afghan instability in the early 21st century: a cauldron of geostrategic intrigue

Publication: Shedden Papers

The central thesis of this paper by Superintendent Jason Byrnes is that the US‐led intervention in Afghanistan, a major part of the so‐called 'War on Terror' that has dominated international relations since 2001, has failed to deliver greater stability to Afghanistan and its immediate region. Indeed, it conjectures that the region will be more unstable during the next decade as the US reduces and possibly (completely) withdraws its presence from Afghanistan.
