The Defence Infrastructure Engineering Manual (IEM) sets the agreed way Defence manages engineering matters on the estate. It outlines what must be considered, who is accountable, and how decisions are expected to be made so that our work is safe, lawful and consistent across the nation.
The IEM ensures that Defence infrastructure is designed, constructed, altered and maintained following appropriate certification processes and in compliance with the requirements of the Australian/New Zealand standards, the National Construction Code, relevant state and territory regulations and all other Defence policies applicable to infrastructure engineering works.
The manual covers the following topics:
- General concepts
- Building works
- Sustainability ratings
- Mechanical services – heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
- Fire engineering
- Electrical engineering
- Clean energy acceleration
- Aeronautical ground lighting
- Electric vehicle charging.
