Greenvale Training Area is being established under the Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative (ASMTI).
Defence is committed to maximising economic benefits for communities and opportunities for local industry in North Queensland across the life of the ASMTI.
Development at Greenvale Training Area will include:
- an Urban Operations Live-fire facility
- camp accommodation and supporting infrastructure
- enabling infrastructure such as roads, fencing, firebreaks, entry points and storage.
Design of the training area is largely complete with design of the Urban Operations Live Fire facility underway, led by Defence’s Managing Contractor CPB Contractors.
Defence has referred the development and future use of the Greenvale Training Area to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water for consideration under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
The delegate for the Minister for the Environment and Water has determined the development and future use of Greenvale Training Area to be a ‘Controlled Action’, requiring formal assessment by Environmental Impact Statement before a decision can be made on whether or not approval can be granted under the EPBC Act.
Following the pre-requisite environmental approvals for the development and future use of the training area, works will commence on delivery of the facilities and infrastructure.
Local businesses will have opportunities to seek work across a range of areas including construction, logistics and technical support through a competitive tender process.
Opportunities during establishment of the training area includes training area design and construction of infrastructure and facilities.
Once the training areas are operational, Defence anticipates there will be additional opportunities for local businesses in logistics, maintenance, administrative and transportation support.
Environmental and cultural heritage activities
The Greenvale Training Area is currently undergoing environmental and cultural heritage assessments, with work underway to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for consideration under the EPBC Act.
As part of this activity, a program of environmental and heritage survey field works will be undertaken on the training area over the next 18 months. Throughout this process, Defence will continue to engage with stakeholders and ensure the local community are aware of key activities occurring onsite.
