The AUKUS licence-free environment is in effect from 1 September 2024. Certain Defence trade between Australia, the United States, and United Kingdom may no longer require permits. Further information on the changes being introduced, including the new permit controls, can be found on Changes to export controls page.
Any person or entity wishing to export, supply, publish, or broker controlled goods or technology (listed on the Defence Strategic Goods List) may require a permit from Defence.
Permit applications are lodged through the My Australian Defence Exports (MADE) portal. Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis against specific legislative criteria.
A Defence Exports Control Client Reference Number (DCRN) is required when applying for permits or to pre-notify use of AUKUS license-free environment. Registration to receive a DCRN can be done via MADE.
Exporters are advised to be aware of any additional obligations when exporting under Australian law, including with Australian Border Force, Australian Sanctions Office, and others.
