Maintaining work–life balance

Natalie Gallagher is an Executive Officer working in the Chief Information Officer Group. Born in Canberra, she completed her primary schooling at St Jude’s Primary and secondary schooling at Merici College. Natalie completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Canberra.

Natalie’s career spans 13 years in the Australian Public Service (APS), with the past five years spent working in the Department of Defence. She started her career in 2002 with the Attorney-General’s Department, working in the Ministerial and Parliamentary Services area, followed by a move to the Family Pathways Branch. It was here that Natalie experienced a career highlight—working on the implementation of the 2004 Family Law reform package. This saw 65 Family Relationship Centres and other support services open across Australia to assist families through all stages of relationships and parenting.

She spent a year living in Darwin, where her husband was on an Army posting, before returning home to Canberra to resume her APS career and start a family. Natalie returned to the Attorney-General’s Department; however, machinery-of-government changes initiated by the incoming government saw her transfer to the then Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. This allowed Natalie to continue working in the Family Relationships Services Program as a policy officer.

Natalie joined Defence in 2010 as an Executive Officer, providing support in the ICT Operations Division at both the branch and division level. She is currently based at the Defence Network Operations Centre at HMAS Harman, where the focus is ‘keeping the lights on’ for Defence ICT services. In this role, Natalie has gained exposure to the operation and sustainment of ICT systems and services to support Defence, including ADF deployed operations.

Upon returning to work after maternity leave in 2013, Natalie sought to achieve a work–life balance by accessing flexible working arrangements.

‘The support of management within the Chief Information Officer Group has been essential to my ability to contribute to organisational outcomes, develop professionally, and balance my career with family responsibilities’, said Natalie.

Natalie is married with two children and enjoys cooking, travel and spending time with family and friends.
