GEOINT Support to Government and Defence

Innovation in Support of Australian Defence Force Operations

AGO is a contributor to Defence's objective of superior combat effectiveness through enhanced situational awareness and decision-making. Key to this is the timely and relevant distribution of information across Defence's information networks. AGO is committed to a high level of investment in the deployment of web-based geospatial dissemination services to improve Australian Defence Force (ADF) combat effectiveness. These systems include navigation systems, command support systems, surveillance systems, weapons platforms, mission planning systems, war games, simulators and facilities/range management systems.

Multinational Geospatial Co-production Program

Australia is a member of the Multinational Geospatial Co-production Program (MGCP), which currently involves 32 nations and is aimed at producing geospatial data at 1:50 000 or 1:100 000 scale of the entire world. MGCP member nations will contribute data to a central data warehouse and will, in time, have unlimited access to all of the data in the program. MGCP is designed to reduce duplication of effort while increasing availability of geospatial data.

Cooperative Mapping Projects

As an Australian Government regional development initiative, Defence is in the process of re-mapping regional nations under memorandums of understanding. AGO has commenced the re-mapping of Papua New Guinea at 1:100 000 scale. Mapping data will be available from the applicable mapping organisation within each country.

Hand-held Imagery Custodians

AGO is responsible for archiving all ADF operational and intelligence imagery. The Defence Hand-held Image Gallery (DHIG) was established to provide access to the imagery for the wider Australian Defence Organisation through a robust web-based interface. The gallery contains imagery from external national organisations and agencies, as well as international partners and Defence agencies.

Geoscience Australia

AGO has a close working relationship with Geoscience Australia as the Australian Government onshore mapping agency. Geoscience Australia and AGO cooperate under service level agreements for the provision of mapping support in and of Australia for the ADF.

Digital Earth Australia Hotspots

Digital Earth Australia Hotspots is a national bushfire monitoring system that provides timely information about hotspots to emergency service managers and critical infrastructure providers across Australia. The mapping system allows users to identify fire locations with a potential risk to communities and property.
