Short Courses

The short course program delivered by the Centre for Defence Research (CDR) upholds the ethos of exchanging free ideas in an atmosphere of full inquiry and debate. The courses are conducted at the Australian Defence College’s Weston Campus in the Australian Capital Territory.

Strategos – Strategic Theory for Practice Course

The Strategos Course is conducted annually in June/July. The course comprises pre-course work online, followed by a five-day residential component. This is an executive professional development course that is aimed at Defence personnel (civilian and military) at senior AP6/EL1 and senior O4/O5 ADF officers, who are currently employed in, or posting into, a strategist role.

The Strategos course provides students with the opportunity to intensively consider the subject of grand strategy and military strategic analysis. It draws upon the use of historical analysis, strategic studies concepts and the corpus of modern futures studies to improve interdisciplinary theory for practice in strategy and strategic analysis. It seeks to improve research and analysis methods for the professional study of present and future armed conflict.

Apollo Future War Analysis Course

The Australian Defence College conducts the Apollo Course annually in October/November. The course comprises pre-course work online, followed by a five-day residential component. This is an executive professional development course that is aimed at Defence personnel (civilian and military) at senior AP6/EL1 and senior O4/O5 ADF Officers who are currently employed in, or posting into a futures role.

The Apollo course provides students with the opportunity to intensively consider the subject of contemporary and future war. It draws upon the use of historical analysis, strategic studies concepts and the corpus of modern futures studies to improve interdisciplinary knowledge of war. It seeks to improve research and analysis methods for the professional study of present and future armed conflict.
