The 2020 Defence Strategic Update identified that Australia’s security environment has deteriorated. Major power competition, military modernisation, disruptive technological change and new threats are all making our region less safe. As the environment changes around us, Defence has to change with it.
Just as we raise, train and sustain our military capabilities and our uniformed people, we must also ensure our enterprise can always adapt to our changing strategic environment.
Lead the Way: Defence Transformation Strategy underpins the way we collectively work together to shape the future. It seeks to create a high-performing one Defence enterprise with an ability to continuously improve and adapt to changing strategic circumstances.
At the core of the Defence Transformation Strategy's success is the participation of everyone across the entire organisation, whether they are behind a desk, on a base, at sea, on the ground or in the sky.
We are creating an environment where our people are empowered to innovate, experiment and transform at a local level.
Some of our incredible change makers, who are challenging the status quo across Defence, have been recognised in the 'I Transform: Powering our future' video below.
Embedding of transformation at the enterprise level will take place through three priority initiatives.
- A continuous improvement culture, based on our values and behaviours, clear accountabilities and trusted information.
- An enduring system for transforming the Defence enterprise which aligns resources to priorities, transformation activities, opportunities and risks.
- Priority reform areas of focus that will optimise our capacity to adapt as circumstances change and are aligned to the direction of the 2020 Defence Strategic Update.
Through the Defence Transformation Strategy, continuous improvements will become part of the DNA of Defence. We must learn, evolve, align and deliver to ensure that we can continue to protect Australia now and into the future.
