Nowra’s UH-1B Iroquois Helicopter (Serial 894) was carefully removed from its long-standing display site in September 2023 for detailed examination and repairs. After more than 20 years exposed to the elements, and a decade since its last refurbishment, the aircraft had begun to show significant deterioration. A heritage assessment by the Royal Australian Navy’s Sea Power Centre, confirmed that helicopter was no longer suitable for public display and posed potential safety risks to the community.

Defence, in partnership with the Shoalhaven City Council, remains committed to honouring the region’s strong ties to HMAS Creswell, HMAS Albatross, the Fleet Air Arm, and the many Australian Defence Force members who have served both the nation and the local community.

Replacing the long-standing 'chopper on a stick' offers the opportunity to continue recognising Nowra's proud aviation history. The new replica will be an enduring feature of the region and a tribute to both past and present Defence personnel.

Poll

The Shoalhaven community is invited to vote on 2 replica model options to replace the original Iroquois 894.

Options
UH-1B Iroquois Helicopter (Serial 894)

The UH-1B 'Huey' served with the Royal Australian Navy from 1964 to 1989 and played a significant role in training, search and rescue, and fleet support. It also holds strong connections to Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War, where Royal Australian Navy personnel flew other variants of the aircraft. A replica of 894 would reinstate a familiar and much-loved symbol that has been part of Nowra's identity for more than 25 years.

Seahawk Helicopter MH-60R

Variants of the Seahawk helicopter have been operated by the Royal Australian Navy since 1988, through the current MH-60R fleet. The Seahawk supports anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, surveillance, fleet support and search and rescue operations. A Seahawk replica would represent the contemporary aviation capability of the Fleet Air Arm and the ongoing role HMAS Albatross plays in supporting naval operations.

The poll will be open from 26 February until 26 March 2026 and will assist in informing the Government's decision on the preferred replacement. Once a decision is made, the project will proceed to tender for construction and installation.
