The Facilities to Support Air 6500 – Integrated Air and Missile Defence Command and Control (Package 1) project aims to provide fit for purpose facilities and infrastructure to support the requirements of the AIR6500 – Integrated Air and Missile Defence Command and Control project at RAAF Base Darwin, Northern Territory.

Information published on this page is intended to complement the information provided to the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Public Works (PWC).

Subject to Parliamentary approval, the construction work is expected to commence by mid 2027 with the expected completion by late 2029.

Community information

Defence recognises the importance of providing local residents, statutory authorities and other interested stakeholders with an opportunity to provide input into, or raise concerns relating to, the project.

Information sessions

Defence is hosting an informal drop-in session open to the public, to provide the community with an opportunity to find out information about the proposed works and to ask questions directly to Defence representatives.

Project details

The project will be delivering the following 5 work elements:

  1. New Operations Support Facility
    Construction of a new Operations Support Facility, including secure briefing rooms, training rooms, working accommodation, and maintenance and operational warehouse facilities.
  2. New Vehicle Shelters
    Construction of 2 new vehicle shelters with capacity for various medium and heavy vehicles, and associated trailers.
  3. New Chiller Plant
    Construction of a new chiller plant containing mechanical chiller units in an external enclosure to support the Operations Support Facility.
  4. New Fire Pump House
    Construction of a new fire pump house to support the Operations Support Facility, Chiller Plant and integration with the existing site fire services.
  5. Supporting Existing Infrastructure Works
    Upgrades to existing infrastructure, as well as provision of new infrastructure where required to support the additional buildings within the 114 Mobile Control and Reporting Unit compound. It involves stormwater redirection, security fence relocation and construction of a new egress road.
