Community Information Session

Defence is holding a second community information session about the divestment of Youngtown Training Depot. This is an opportunity for the community to speak with Australian Government representatives and receive an update about the divestment process, transition planning and next steps.

This session will also provide information on the divestment of TS Argonaut, DSTG Scottsdale, Stony Head Military Training Area, and Buckland Military Training Area.

Functions

Youngtown Depot was constructed in the 1970s and is an Army Reserves depot. Buildings on site provide office and working accommodation, including logistics and vehicles storage.

This site serves as an Army Reserves and Cadet training facility.

The Defence Estate Audit recommendations will enhance Defence work environments, ensuring our estate is a key point of attraction and is fit-for-purpose for both current and future members of the workforce. These improvements will strengthen the overall appeal of working for Defence.

Relocation

Youngtown Depot personnel will relocate to the new tri‑service Cadet depot being constructed in North Launceston, 6km away.

Cadets will remain in the region and relocate to the new tri‑service Cadet depot or to a new lease at a community venue or school. Defence will engage with potential venues to facilitate this.

Community engagement

Defence held information sessions in Tasmania in April 2026 to engage with the community on the Defence Audit and divestment of sites. Community members shared valuable local insights and feedback with Defence. This feedback will help inform transition planning and next steps.
