Community Information Session

Defence is holding a second community information session about the divestment of Stony Head Training Area. This is an opportunity for the community to speak with Australian Government representatives and receive an update about the divestment process, transition planning and next steps.

This session will also provide information on the divestment of TS Argonaut, DSTG Scottsdale, Youngtown Depot, and Buckland Military Training Area.

Functions

Stony Head Training Area is located on the north-east coast of Tasmania comprising 5,335 hectares of Commonwealth owned land, and a further 107 hectares of land leased from Tasmania Government. The training area has been predominantly used for training since World War II.

This training area is used for live fire activities, navigation and defensive training.

Community engagement

Defence held information sessions in Tasmania in April 2026 to engage with the community on the Defence Audit and divestment of sites. Community members shared valuable local insights and feedback with Defence. This feedback will help inform transition planning and next steps.
