Community Information Session

Defence is holding a second community information session about the divestment of St Kilda Training Depot. This is an opportunity for the community to speak with Australian Government representatives and receive an update about the divestment process, transition planning and next steps.

This session will also provide information on the divestment of Victoria Barracks Melbourne, Sandringham Training Depot, and the Repatriation Clinic 310 St Kilda Rd.

The Defence Estate Audit recommendations will enhance Defence work environments, ensuring our estate is a key point of attraction and is fit-for-purpose for both current and future members of the workforce. These improvements will strengthen the overall appeal of working for Defence.

Relocation

St Kilda Training Depot personnel will relocate Oakleigh Training Depot, 14 km away.

History and heritage

The Australian Government is committed to preserving and enhancing public access to historically significant sites and collections, including museums. Properties on the Commonwealth Heritage List have protections under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The Government has an obligation to protect the Commonwealth Heritage Value of a property as part of any sale. Alternative heritage management options will also be considered.

There is a Commonwealth Heritage Listing for one building on this site for the Artillery Orderly Room/Drill Hall.

The historical artillery collection on site is used on special occasions, such as ANZAC Day. There is no public access to this site.

Options will be explored with future owners to manage heritage obligations as a condition of sale.

Where feasible, museums and collections will be retained and preserved on-site. The Government will also explore partnerships with heritage organisations and trusts to support heritage protection strategies.

Community engagement will inform decisions on preserving and enhancing heritage presentation and public access.

Community engagement

Defence held information sessions in Victoria in April 2026 to engage with the community on the Defence Audit and divestment of sites. Community members shared valuable local insights and feedback with Defence. This feedback will help inform transition planning and next steps.
