This site is located on the south-west corner of Victoria Barracks Melbourne. The Clinic is a two-storey heritage building built in 1937 for repatriation outpatient care for veterans. It was converted to office space in the post-war period. This site has been vacant since 1998. It was identified as surplus to Defence requirements in 2015.
The building is currently unused.
Significant maintenance, remediation, safety and security and heritage works were completed in December 2023.
The site is currently unsuitable for occupancy. In December 2023, Defence completed works to address significance maintenance, safety and security issues to prevent further deterioration.

History and heritage
The Australian Government is committed to preserving and enhancing public access to historically significant sites and collections, including museums. Properties on the Commonwealth Heritage List have protections under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The Government has an obligation to protect the Commonwealth Heritage Value of a property as part of any sale. Alternative heritage management options will also be considered, including:
- Retention of heritage elements.
- Adaptive reuse of sites to preserve heritage facades and certain characteristics of the buildings.
- Relocation and/or restoration of remaining buildings to preserve heritage values.
- Archival recordings of buildings.
The Repatriation Clinic is part of the Victoria Barracks Precinct Commonwealth Heritage Listing. Options will be explored with future owners to manage heritage obligations as a condition of sale.
Community engagement will inform decisions on preserving and enhancing heritage presentation and public access.
