Functions

HMAS Leeuwin was established in August 1941 as a naval depot during World War II. The site was decommissioned as a naval base in 1986, transferred to the Australian Army, and renamed Leeuwin Barracks. It was declared surplus to Defence requirements in 2014. Divestment was paused in 2021. 

This site serves as office space, logistics, Army Reserves and Cadet training facility.

The Defence Estate Audit recommendations will enhance Defence work environments, ensuring our estate is a key point of attraction and is fit-for-purpose for both current and future members of the workforce. These improvements will strengthen the overall appeal of working for Defence.

Relocation

Leeuwin Barracks personnel will relocate to Palmer Barracks, 21 km away.

Cadets will relocate to Palmer Barracks or a new lease at a community venue or school in the region. Defence will engage with potential venues to facilitate this.
