Kowandi North is vacant land located approximately 30km south-east of Darwin. The site was previously used as a Defence communications station. The site was declared surplus in 2014.
This site has been vacant since 2013.
Many security incidents including unauthorised access and damage to fencing and gates have resulted in costly repairs.

Defence held an information session in Darwin on 20 April 2026 to engage with the community on the Defence Audit and divestment of Kowandi North. Community members shared valuable local insights and feedback with Defence. This feedback will help inform transition planning and next steps.
