Functions
Commissioned in 1942, HMAS Penguin is part of Navy Fleet Command. This site will be partially divested to retain the critical capability, with the exact portions to be finalised through the divestment process.
This site delivers Navy clearance diver, underwater medicine and maritime geospatial training, a Weapons Training Simulations System and live-in accommodation.
Navy clearance diver training and an underwater medicine unit is critical capability.

History and heritage
The Australian Government is committed to preserving and enhancing public access to historically significant sites and collections, including museums.
Properties on the Commonwealth Heritage List have protections under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity
Conservation Act 1999. The Government has an obligation to protect the Commonwealth Heritage Value of a property as part of any sale. Alternative heritage management options will also be considered.
There is one Commonwealth Heritage Listing for the whole site, which includes multiple buildings.
