Functions

Fort Direction was first acquired in 1938 and expanded in 1986 when additional land was acquired. Historically, Fort Direction was used for coastal defence, as a training camp and signal station.

This site provides a storage compound and distribution facility. Government will engage with existing tenants as part of the divestment process.

There are 2 Aboriginal cultural sites within Fort Direction with Indigenous access arrangements in place.

Community information session

Defence held information sessions in Tasmania in April 2026 to engage with the community on the Defence Audit and divestment of sites. Community members shared valuable local insights and feedback with Defence. This feedback will help inform transition planning and next steps.
