Full divestment

Announcement

The Australian Government has announced they will work together with the Tasmanian State Government to redevelop and transform Derwent Barracks at Dowsing Point in Hobart as part of a joint initiative to help deliver new housing and support community growth.

Defence will transition from Derwent Barracks in a carefully managed way. The considerate relocation of Defence personnel, capability and cadets is expected to take at least 12 months.

Defence will continue to work closely with Defence personnel, families, cadets and the local community to ensure transitions are managed respectfully. Defence Personnel and cadets will not be moved until suitable locations are found and ongoing consultations are complete.

Functions

Derwent Barracks hosts Army Reserve units and functions, logistics facilities and cadet programs.

This site provides office space, logistics and a Reserves and Cadet training facility. Government will engage with existing tenants as part of the divestment process.

Cadets will remain in the region and relocate to Anglesea Barracks or a new lease at a community venue or school. Defence will engage with potential venues to facilitate this.

Community information session

Defence held information sessions in Tasmania in April 2026 to engage with the community on the Defence Audit and divestment of sites. Community members shared valuable local insights and feedback with Defence. This feedback will help inform transition planning and next steps.
