The Defence Asbestos and Hazardous Chemicals Exposure Scheme (DAHCES) provides access to health assessment services for anyone exposed to asbestos or other hazardous chemicals during a Defence activity or undertaking,
The scheme provides access to a health assessment for exposure to asbestos, beryllium, cadmium and lead.
DAHCES is not a compensation scheme. The scheme does not provide access to treatment or compensation. The results of the health assessment can be used to support a compensation claim with either Comcare or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
The scheme does provide financial compensation if travel of more than 50km is required to attend a health assessment.
To access the scheme:
- Current service ADF members, reservists and cadets, must register a chemical exposure via Sentinel. They will then be provided an assessment through their Garrison Health Centre.
- Current Defence APS employees must register a chemical exposure via Sentinel. They must then seek an assessment through their health provider.
- Contractors to Defence need to contact their employer for further information and medical support services.
- All others wishing to register a chemical exposure contact 1800 333 362 or yourcustomer.service@defence.gov.au and seek an assessment through their health provider.
An information pack will be sent to registrants, including a health assessment questionnaire, once the exposure has been registered.
